What are your thoughts on PABA?

Kelly asks:

I am looking for another supplement for my 6 year son and this website was recommended by Dr. Sunyatta Amen. But I noticed that one of the ingredients is PABA…Naturopath MDs are asking that we use PABA free products…I would like to hear your thoughts.

The Vitamin Professor Responds:

Thank you for your interest in ALL ONE for Kids.

As a nutritional supplement, PABA is an important component in relation to B-Complex vitamins.  PABA (Para-aminobenzoic acid) is used to improve the protein used in the body, it relates to red blood cell formation as well as assisting the manufacture of folic acid in the intestines.

I believe the negative press, and warnings by Naturopath MDs, that you are referring to has to do with PABA when it is used in skin-care products.

In the past (1970′s), PABA was widely used in sunscreens as a UV filter. However, studies in the early 1980′s sugggested PABA might increase the risk of cellular UV damage. On the basis of these studies as well as problems with allergies (when used topically) and clothing discoloration, PABA fell out of favor as a sunscreen.

I am unaware of any counter indications of PABA when used internally, as a supplement, as part of the B-Complex in a comprehensive nutritional product.
