Nutrient Absorption

Nutrient Absorption is an extremely important consideration when you are choosing a multiple vitamin, mineral and amino acid supplement. You can be using the absolutely highest quality source material and ingredients but if they are not available to digest and easy to access by your body and get into the blood they can do little to no good.?  The most common way to take vitamins, referred to as the ‘mode of administration,’ is the the vitamin pill.?  Unfortunately, this is the least pill-photo-for-blgefficient when it comes to facilitate proper nutrient absorption. To demonstrate this whenever I am invited to be a guest on a television show I will often begin the segment by dropping a vitamin pill into water. It becomes an effective visual demonstration of how ineffective pills are when it comes to nutrient absorption. Invariably whether the segment runs 5 minutes or even an entire half hour by the end of the show sure enough when they cut away to the pill in the glass there it sits solid as ever. One time one of the cameramen told me a story about a show he had seen recently in which the sewer workers in New York City said it was very common to find pills in the sewer that were so intact that they could still read the brand name on the tablet. When you have about 7 minutes you can watch that show here.

Nutrient Absorption – Pills vs Liquids

O.K. that’s big news. The most common form for ingesting vitamins it the least effective when it comes to nutrient absorption. Our friends over at vitaminmaniac.com performed a simple experiment to compare the difference between liquids and tablets when it came to nutrient digestion and absorption. Quite interesting …?  yet with predictable results. So what are the alternatives? Capsules dissolve a bit easier but vegetarians object to the gelatin. Liquids are all the rage right not but liquids come with their own set of problems. Liquids tend to be incomplete.?  Minerals settle very quickly do to their molecular weight, therefore, important minerals are often eliminated or reduced to insignificant levels.?  If the liquid supplement does contain significant levels of minerals you will find non nutritive suspending agents like glycerin are added to the formulation. But the biggest and most dangerous drawback associated with liquid supplements is the presence of sodium benzoate or potassium benzoate. These preservatives considered essential to the shelf life of a pre-made liquid and are found in almost everyone out there. The problem here is that sodium benzoate or potassium benzoate when mixed with ascorbic acid (vitamin C), which is found in all liquids creates benzene a known carcinogenic substance with no known safe levels. Don’t know about you but that fact alone took liquids off my list. You can read more about that here.
